Kriya Sharir (Ayurvedic Physiology) is the department that studies the normal functions of the living human body from both Ayurvedic and modern scientific perspectives. “Kriya” means function and “Sharir” means body — together representing the dynamic interplay of physiological processes that maintain health and life.
The Ayurvedic framework of physiology is built on the foundational concepts of Tridosha (Vata, Pitta, Kapha — the three biological humours), Sapta Dhatu (seven body tissues: Rasa, Rakta, Mamsa, Meda, Asthi, Majja, Shukra), Tri Mala (three excretory products: Mutra, Purisha, Sweda), and Agni (thirteen types of metabolic fire). These concepts are correlated with modern physiology including cardiovascular function, neurophysiology, endocrinology, immunology, and biochemistry.
The department is equipped with a modern Physiology Laboratory for practicals including blood grouping, haemoglobin estimation, ECG recording, spirometry, and reflex testing. Prakriti (individual body constitution) assessment — Ayurveda’s personalized medicine approach — is a key teaching focus, with students learning to apply Prakriti analysis for health promotion and disease risk assessment.
