Rachana Sharir Department

Rachana Sharir (Ayurvedic Anatomy) is the foundational department that studies the structure and organization of the human body. “Rachana” means construction or structure and “Sharir” means body — this department provides the structural blueprint upon which all clinical knowledge is built, integrating classical Ayurvedic anatomical descriptions with modern gross anatomy, histology, embryology, and genetics.

Ayurvedic anatomy uniquely describes the body through concepts of Srotas (body channels and transport systems), Marma (107 vital anatomical points), Dhatu (tissues and their micro-anatomy), Kosha (body sheaths), and Asthi (skeletal system with 300 bones as described by Sushruta). The Marma Shastra component is of particular clinical relevance — knowledge of Marma points is essential for surgical safety, Panchakarma therapy, and understanding the basis of Ayurvedic acupressure.

The department has a well-maintained Dissection Hall with cadavers for hands-on anatomical study, a comprehensive Anatomy Museum with models, charts, plastinated specimens, and osteology collection, and a Histology Laboratory with microscopes for tissue study. Embryology and genetics are taught with integration of Ayurvedic Garbha (embryology) concepts from Charaka and Sushruta Samhita.
