Samhita & Siddhanta (also known as Ayurvedic Siddhanta or Padartha Vijnana) is the foundational department of Ayurvedic education, covering the study of classical Ayurvedic texts and the philosophical principles that form the bedrock of the entire Ayurvedic system.
The Brihat Trayi — the three great classical texts — form the core curriculum: Charaka Samhita (the definitive text on internal medicine and Ayurvedic philosophy), Sushruta Samhita (the authoritative text on surgery and anatomy), and Ashtanga Hridayam of Vagbhata (a concise encyclopedia of all eight branches). The Laghu Trayi including Madhava Nidana, Sharangdhara Samhita, and Bhavaprakasha are also studied.
The department also covers Padartha Vijnana — Ayurvedic metaphysics including Panchamahabhuta theory, Tridosha Siddhanta, Sapta Dhatu, Tri Mala, Agni theory, Srotas, and Prakriti — along with the history of Ayurveda from its Vedic origins. Sanskrit proficiency is developed to enable students to access and interpret classical texts in their original language, ensuring authentic understanding and practice of Ayurveda.
