Sanskrit Department

The Sanskrit Department at SAJAMC provides dedicated language training in Sanskrit — the sacred language in which all foundational Ayurvedic classical texts are written. Proficiency in Sanskrit is essential for Ayurvedic students to directly access, interpret, and apply the wisdom of ancient texts without dependence on translations, which may carry interpretive limitations.

The curriculum covers Devanagari script mastery, Sanskrit grammar (Vyakarana), vocabulary building with emphasis on medical and philosophical terminology, and progressive reading of Ayurvedic Samhita verses (Shlokas). Students are trained in Shloka recitation, grammatical analysis, and contextual interpretation of classical passages from Charaka Samhita, Sushruta Samhita, and Ashtanga Hridayam.

The department conducts regular Shloka competitions, Sanskrit seminars, and recitation programs to foster enthusiasm for classical learning. A well-stocked department library houses Sanskrit dictionaries, commentaries (Teeka), and reference works on Ayurvedic Sanskrit. Mastery of Sanskrit enhances the student’s ability to engage with the original depth and nuance of Ayurvedic knowledge preserved over thousands of years.
