Shalya Tantra — the Ayurvedic science of surgery — is one of the eight branches of Ashtanga Ayurveda. Maharshi Sushruta, revered as the Father of Surgery worldwide, codified this science in the Sushruta Samhita, describing over 300 surgical procedures, 120 surgical instruments (Yantra and Shastra), and detailed principles of wound management, asepsis, and surgical anatomy.
The department at SAJAMC specializes in the management of ano-rectal disorders including Arsha (haemorrhoids), Bhagandara (fistula-in-ano), Parikartika (fissure), and Gudabhramsha using the time-tested Ksharasutra therapy — an Ayurvedic para-surgical procedure recognized globally for its high success rate and low recurrence.
The department also manages wounds (Vrana), abscesses (Vrana Shopha), urinary disorders (Mutrakriccha), fractures (Bhagna), and skin conditions using Agnikarma (heat cauterization) and Raktamokshana. A minor operation theatre with full sterilization facility supports safe surgical care with 12 in-patient beds.
